GMAT study planning

Build a GMAT plan across all three sections.

Create a GMAT study plan that balances Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Data Insights, pacing, section order, and review.

A strong GMAT plan treats Data Insights as a full section, not an afterthought, and uses evidence to choose section order. Start with an official baseline, then build a weekly cycle around the exact decisions that cost points or time.

Diagnose by section and question type

Record more than a total score. In Quantitative Reasoning, separate arithmetic or algebra gaps from setup and logic errors. In Verbal Reasoning, track passage comprehension, inference, argument structure, assumptions, and evaluation. In Data Insights, record the display or question type that created difficulty.

A correct but unusually slow response still belongs in the review log. Adaptive tests punish late-section time collapse even when early work was excellent.

Build an integrated week

Use focused sessions for one reasoning pattern, mixed sessions for switching costs, and timed sections for pacing. Include Data Insights several times per week because it draws on both quantitative and verbal reasoning while adding complex displays.

Review by rebuilding the solution from the prompt. For Data Sufficiency, identify exactly what information would be sufficient before judging the statements. For Critical Reasoning, state the conclusion and evidence before evaluating options.

Test section order instead of guessing

Choose two plausible orders and test each under full-length conditions. Compare accuracy, pacing, perceived fatigue, and the quality of the final section. Keep the better-supported order for later simulations.

Practice the optional break in its intended position. A strategy that exists only on paper is not yet a test-day routine.

Final-phase preparation

In the final weeks, prioritize realistic official practice, recurring error patterns, and stable pacing. Reduce last-minute topic expansion. Rehearse the review screen and limit answer changes to cases with a specific reason.

  • Finish every timed section.
  • Use bookmarks selectively.
  • Practice Quant without a calculator and Data Insights with the on-screen calculator.
  • Review the official policies before test day.
High-value review: For every changed answer, record why the first choice failed and what new evidence justified the change. This prevents unproductive second-guessing.
