A current SHSAT plan must prepare both content and digital decision-making. Students need strong ELA and Math foundations, but they also need to answer before advancing, manage passage sets carefully, and allocate a shared 180-minute testing window.
Begin with the official digital experience
Use the NYCPS Student Readiness Tool before treating a score as a baseline. Learn highlighting, elimination, notepad, and navigation behavior first. Then complete an official digital practice test under standard time.
Classify every difficult item by subject, skill, error type, and interface behavior. An accidental navigation or incomplete answer is not the same as a content gap, even though both reduce the result.
Build paired ELA and Math weeks
Study both subjects every week. For ELA, alternate close reading with revising and editing. For Math, combine concept review with multi-step applications. End focused sessions with unfamiliar questions so success depends on transfer.
Use short mixed sets to practice switching, but keep enough single-skill work to diagnose the exact weakness. A large mixed score alone cannot tell you what to teach next.
Practice irreversible decisions
Because most questions cannot be revisited after advancing, use a compact final check. In ELA, confirm that the selected answer is supported by the passage or improves the stated editing goal. In Math, confirm units, signs, and the requested quantity.
For passage sets, decide how much time to reserve for reviewing the set before submission. Test the rule in practice and revise it from evidence.
Rehearse the shared time budget
Students may choose the starting subject and divide the 180 minutes. Try both starting orders during practice. Compare accuracy, unfinished questions, and fatigue rather than choosing based on preference alone.
- Use at least one full official digital practice test.
- Practice all current item formats.
- Track time by section and passage set.
- Review official test-day and accommodation guidance with a parent, guardian, or counselor.
