“The Regents” is not one uniform test. New York State publishes separate examinations, reference materials, schedules, scoring directions, and archives across English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Preparation must begin with the exact course and administration.

Identify the exact examination

Current NYSED materials include English Language Arts; Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II; Life Science: Biology, Physical Science: Chemistry, Earth and Space Sciences, and Physical Science: Physics; and social studies examinations. Implementation schedules can change which version a cohort takes.

Write the full exam title and administration date at the top of the study plan. Confirm both with the school. Do not assume that a guide for an older course title or learning standard matches the student’s exam.

Use the official archive correctly

NYSED publishes past examinations, scoring materials, reference sheets or tables, and administration-specific information. Past exams are most useful when paired with the corresponding scoring key and when the content aligns with the current course.

A raw percentage from one past paper is not necessarily the reported Regents scale score. Use official conversion information for that administration when available and focus review on item-level evidence.

Formats vary by subject

ELA asks students to read, analyze, and write from texts. Mathematics exams combine procedural fluency, modeling, reasoning, and written work. Science exams draw on course concepts, data, models, and subject-specific reference materials. Social studies requires evidence-based historical reasoning and constructed responses.

Because the tasks differ, a single generic test-taking strategy is insufficient. Match practice to the response types, reference materials, and scoring expectations of the exact exam.

Schedules, policies, and local guidance

NYSED publishes January, June, and August examination schedules, but a student’s school determines local administration details and can explain graduation-pathway requirements. Check official information again near the exam date.

Students with accommodations or questions about eligibility should work with their school. A public study guide cannot replace school-specific guidance.

Accuracy rule: Always match a past examination with its official scoring materials and verify that it belongs to the current course and standards.
